- * Chromo domain *
- *****************
-
- Modifiers of variegation are proteins that modify the structure of chromatin
- to the condensed morphology of heterochromatin, a cytologically visible
- condition where gene expression is repressed. Proteins involved in this
- phenomena contain a highly conserved domain of 37 amino-acid residues called
- [1] the 'chromo' (CHRromatin Organization MOdifier) domain.
-
- Currently, this domain has been found in the following proteins:
-
- - Drosophila heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1).
- - Drosophila protein Polycomb (Pc).
- - Mammalian modifier 1, modifier 2 and modifier 3 [2].
-
- The signature pattern for the chromo domain spans its entire length.
-
- -Consensus pattern: [YF]-x(2)-E-x-[LIVM](2)-x-[KR](2)-[LV]-x(2)-G-x-[LV]-E-Y-
- x-[LIVM]-K-W-[KR]-G-[FYW]-x(4)-N-[ST]-W-E-P-E-x-N
- -Sequences known to belong to this class detected by the pattern: ALL.
- -Other sequence(s) detected in SWISS-PROT: NONE.
- -Last update: October 1993 / Pattern and text revised.
